THE HORRIBLE PEOPLE (THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE)- PROJECT STATEMENT
Though the initial incentive for producing 'The Horrible People/The Beautiful People' series may have somewhat devalue its relevance, it has since become
a worthy counterpart to 'The Beautiful People' series, and has enabled me to question certain aspects of my painting and subject.
Firstly, by relieving the work of the impact of scale, I have had to discover new techniques to account for any loss in the transition.
By allowing the brushwork to remain visible, I have attempted to reproduce the appearance of low resolution digital photography, and so, by exposing
the structure, have allowed a greater accessibility to the viewer.
Through this series, I have also been able to present an alternative view of my subject. The Something Beautiful Something Free
series of paintings concentrate on the intimacy of the subjects' private environment. In contrast, these pieces emphasise the situation of an
outdoor festival. With the different dress codes identifying each individual to a particular group, they present a public image of
themselves, which they are comfortable with.
Both series touch upon the notion of individualism within subcultures, whether it is through their personality or, as in this series, their appearance.
