Charlotte Sometimes
Since the tragic yearning which is central to Romanticism and the Gothic novel has been inspirational to contemporary movements in fashion and music the series Charlotte Sometimes is an essential exploration of the source material. The pastoral landscape here becomes the backdrop, replacing the artifice of inner city parks and the teenage bedroom featured in other series or works.
The Pre-Raphaelites and Alma-Tadema are of renewed interest, in particular their referencing of the Middle Ages became an inspiration to mimic a similar escapism from today to the Victorian era. Charlotte Sometimes was created as a body of work of a fictionalised Victorian artist, taking its cue from factual correspondence from the late 19th century. The story told is that of lost works re-enacted and the tragic depression and death/suicide of the artist's fiancee and muse Charlotte, who becomes the central character in this body of work. Charlotte is as much a heroine of the Victorian era as she is a darkly melancholic contemporary figure.
